Integrate EM OPS Center 12c, EM Cloud Control 12c and Oracle VM Manager

I managed to install Enterprise Manager OPS Center 12c (based on the step by step description of Gokhan Atil http://www.gokhanatil.com/2012/04/how-to-install-oracle-ops-center-12c.html)

Next I started to see how I would be able to integrate EM OPS Center 12c with my EM Cloud Control 12c and Oracle VM Manager 3.0 Installation.

Using Metric Extensions in EM12c

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c introduces a new concept called “Metric Extensions”, that replaces the concept of User Defined Metrics.

User Defined Metrics are still supported in EM12c, but Oracle encourages you to migrate to Metric Extensions, as User Defined Metrics will not be supported in the next major release of Enterprise Manager.

Installing Patch Set Update using EM12c

The integration between EM12c and My Oracle Support provides us with a constant inside on available and relevant patches. Based on this integration we can access all patch information in MOS instantly from Enterprise Manager and create a Patch Plan, Analyse included Patches and start the actual deployment to multiple Targets.

In this paper we will see that the installation of a Patch Set Update using EM12c is as easy as 1,2,3

Administration Groups in EM12c

In previous releases of Enterprise Manager, we were able to create Groups that allowed us to monitor a group of Targets that were logically related. For instance specific groups based on the Lifecyle phase (Development, Test, Acceptance, Production), of based on the specific SLA the Targets were assigned to.

A great way to organise Targets and to focus on specific Groups in your monitoring setup. A drawback however, when looking at maintaining these groups. In too many situations at Customer sites, assigning newly created Targets to a specific Group simply was forgotten.  This often resulted in incomplete monitoring of specific Targets.

Enterprise Manager 12c brings us a solution to this problem by introducing ‘Administration Groups’. When setting up an Administration Group, you need to identify specific Target Properties like ‘Department’, ‘Line of Business’, ‘Lifecycle Phase’ and others to relate to a certain level in the Administration Hierarchy. Where a Hierarchy might be based on multiple Properties.

If then for instance, a Target get’s assigned a specific ‘Line of Business’, the Target will be assigned automatically to the appropriate Group in the Hierarchy. By this you will be sure each Target is assigned to the right Group.

Auto Discovery of Targets in EM12c

Using Enterprise Manager 11 and earlier, you needed to install an Agent any time a new Server was introduced in your datacentre.

Then after you would have created a new Database or any other Target Type, you would need to perform a discovery using the Agent that was monitoring the specific server.

Starting with Enterprise Manager 12c your Targets can get discovered automatically even if no Agent has been installed yet.
